By David Cole observes a dramatic tidal shift in both the public and the political implications of the same-sex marriage movement. In terms of political changes, he cites the difference in views on the issue at both the ballot-box and within state legislatures between the 2004 election and the current day.

His analysis covers the topic across three new books: Gay Marriage: For Better or for Worse? What We’ve Learned from the Evidence by William N. Eskridge Jr. and Darren Spedale, Evan Gerstmann’s Same-Sex Marriage and the Constitution and Marriage, Sexuality and Gender by Robin West.

Digital Desire – J. Stephen Hicks

June 12, 2009

When we first heard about Stephen Hicks book, ‘Digital Desire,’ we expected a volume of sensuous beauties all given the digital treatment in a fantasy post-production style. Instead, we are treated to some of the world’s most gorgeous models photographed digitally as part of Hicks’ 20 years worth of work for major magazines.

What Hicks and his team have come up with is a collection of beautiful photographs that are made all the more alluring by the selection of the stunningly gorgeous models that Hicks has chosen to exhibit. From his beginnings as a landscape photographer, Hicks’ demonstrates a keen sense of the aesthetic in his set ups and execution making for a book of well chosen photographs one of the better examples of glamour photography collections.

Hicks describes his transition from the relatively stable world of film photography into the digital realm as allowing him to become much more ‘fluid, free and crazy.’ The energy and spontaneity of this transition shows itself well in the shot selection presented here as well. The layouts range from single shot pages to four-up by always walking the fine line between tasteful and exuberant.

For more where this came from, be sure to check out Hicks’ Digital Desire website as well as this interview with the photographer from Fine Art TV.

The Secrets of Female Sexuality by David Shade

June 12, 2009

David-Shade-Secrets-Of-Female-Sexuality-220x340When David Shade lost his first wife to a ‘bad boy,’ he set about a journey to discover what kept females interested and what kind of women to look for (and which kind to avoid). Shade believes it all relates to sex and in fact likes to use a familiar quote: “For men, sex is sex. For women, sex is everything else.”

Shade goes on to elaborate about what kind of woman is most open to a relationship (high self esteem, well educated, etc.) and believes the best bet for any man’s happiness is to find the legendary “Daddy’s Girl.” Of course, this is easier said than done, but in both this book and his follow-up workbooks, CDs and tools, he outlines a step-by-step approach to finding Ms. Right.

Though interviews, background information and even handwriting analysis, Shade imbues the reader with the signposts to look for in a good mate. He also explores and explodes numerous myths about female sexuality from both his own research and the feedback from many of his followers via a plethora of emails recanting both good and bad experiences from the past.

While Shade’s findings are less clinical and more anecdotal than many books on the same subject, his point-of-view along with that of his readers, goes a long way to simply the choices one makes in mate selection as well as the things to avoid.
